A lot of people don’t give a lot of thought to using their own money when financing their business. At the time, it makes a lot of sense to just use the money you already have, but you could be setting yourself up for trouble later on.

All of these scenarios highlight why you should establish business credit as soon as you can after starting your business. Having corporate credit puts up a wall between your personal assets and your business assets.

In the excitement of coming up with a plan, most entrepreneurs get so excited about the possibilities, they overlook whether or not the idea is even viable.

While some ideas do take off without planning, more often then not, an idea without a plan, especially without market research, will fail. This failure will leave your company with less financial resources and potentially credibility issues. Keep your business on the right track by having a plan.

The easy part of course is to imagine the possibilities. This best case scenario dreaming overlooks the very real constraints of financial resources (how much will it cost?), demographic (is there a market for it - and is this what they need at this stage of their life) and material resources (does the technology exist?).

Passion is important in small businesses. Passion without objectivity can be dangerous. Without a focused plan, you will spend time on untargeted areas, wasting dollars as you backtrack to ensure that all the little fires are put out. Just as you build a house brick by brick, your business plan needs to be built, brick by brick, step by step.

So what is involved in your market research? Have you looked into industry associations to see what information they can provide for you? What government agencies can assist you find out where others have failed, and where your idea might provide the solution. Do you know your market? Who is your customer? What stage of life are they at? Are you looking to sell to a younger couple? If they are having children right now, they may not have money for your product, unless it helps them to raise their kids. Are they retired? How much money do they have to spend. Does your idea answer a need or a want? Consumers spend money on what they deem they need. Sometimes, with some clever marketing, a want can turn into a need.

Have you asked industry experts about the pros and cons of your approach? If they provide you reasons why your idea wont work, it may be an opportunity to ensure your plan is foolproof by finding the solution that that problem.

Believe it or not, having a successful mindset begins first in your head and then manifests into everything you do including the people you interact with - your friends, family, colleagues, business associates, clients and customers.

Your mental attitude dictates whether you will be receptive and accepting of new things, ideas, and people. By having an open and positive attitude you can choose to view ANY life situation as an opportunity OR a problem. And, when you begin your day with a deliberate optimistic and realistic attitude, your physical environment, personal relationships, and business partnerships become a stepping stone for success.

Take a mental inventory of where you live, your work and with whom you associate?

For this article, let?s start with your physical environment and where you live.

Look around your home.

Is your environment comfortable?
Pleasing to your eye?

Is it a place you can relax and unwind from your day?
Does your home comfort and nurture you?

As you look around, are there things that are bugging you?

You might not realize how much your physical surroundings have a direct affect on sustaining a positive mindset.

For example:

Things that zap your energy in your physical environment such as paper clutter, things that need to be repaired or replaced; mounting unread magazines, clothes that haven?t been worn in a few years can be big stress and anxiety producers. In fact, clutter is a major energy drain for lots of people. Clutter is anything unused, unfinished, unresolved, tolerated or disorganized.

Do you walk around your home mentally noticing things piling up and start to feel distracted and tired? What physical changes have you wanted to make in your home that keep being postponed? Have you been thinking about moving?

Ok - so you might be thinking you?ll have to make some pretty big changes to create a more conducive environment, right?

1. Handle any physical clutter. Sort it, file, it or dump it. If you have a lot of clutter, break it down into small projects that can be done over a short period of time. Do something every day to reduce the clutter.

2. Have repairs or need to replace stuff? Schedule specific times in your calendar to get them done.

3. Rearrange things in your home to shift the energy and mood. If you work from home and have your business in your bedroom. Move it to another location in your home. Make this a priority. Your bedroom is a place to end your day and prepare for sleep. Consider hiring a professional organizer to access your home for space-saving suggestions and systems. It might be one of the best investments you make (to help you eliminate clutter too!)

4. Freshen things up. For a small financial investment, you might add a splash of color by painting or adding some new pillows, changing your bedding, updating your CD collection, and bringing in some new plants.

At the same time, the owners of the business don’t want to put up their own money for business expenses, so it’s time to establish a business line of credit.

Much like a personal line of credit, having corporate credit allows you to get credit cards or loans. This will make it possible for you to grow your business the way you need to without putting your own assets and good credit at risk.

One of the most important things about establishing business credit is that you need to have good personal credit first. Just because your personal money isn’t involved in the decision to give you business credit doesn’t mean that having bad personal credit won’t keep you from getting a business loan.

If you already have decent personal credit, you need to set up your business so that it is, in fact, a real business. That means if you need a license or a permit to run your business, you should have that paperwork. If you’re a corporation or an LLC, make sure your filings are up to date with the state.

You need to have a physical address, not just a P.O. Box, and a business phone line. Even if you’re running your business out of your home, go ahead and get a phone line in the business name. It’s a small step that helps build the foundation to establishing the business as a separate entity worthy of its own credit.

To start building your business credit, it’s important to deal with companies that will give you business credit without using your personal credit information and that will then report to the business credit reporting services.

There are probably half a million companies that extend business credit, but only about 10,000 that actually report that information to the credit bureaus. You need to find those companies that do report the information so you can start building your corporate credit.

There are a few key things not to do in your quest for business credit. First, don’t try to buy credit. There are companies out there that try to sell and trade references for money, but it’s a rip off that will get your business put in the “high risk” category in no time.

Second, don’t worry about trying to establish a so-called “shelf corporation” or “aged corporation” to help you build business credit. It’s just not necessary, and even new businesses can build credit.

Voip and your Business

In the process of trying to explain to some older friends why they should consider VOIP service for their home, it struck me that I have not found a true beginner’s guide or novice guide that explains what VOIP is and why it may be a good economic and financial decision. This article will address home VOIP service from the beginner’s standpoint, and while not addressing each and every question or concern about VOIP, should provide enough basic information to the point where it will give you a background to know what you are looking at and whether or not it makes sense for your home.

Basic Requirement

The VOIP service provider, almost regardless of which one you choose, does NOT provide your high-speed Internet access. When you buy the VOIP service from them, they assume you already have that. You see, VOIP service uses your existing high-speed Internet service to make and receive phone calls, and the VOIP provider assumes you already have that to email, surf the web, etc.

Even if you do already have high-speed Internet access, it needs to be stable, fast, and reliable. If it is not all three of those things, you are not going to be happy with VOIP service from ANY provider. If your high-speed Internet connection is via satellite, do not consider VOIP, satellite will not work well with it.

Your Local Phone Number

In larger cities and major metropolitan areas, you can almost always get a phone number for your VOIP phone that would be considered a LOCAL phone call for people in your area who want to call you. But in many less-than-metropolitan areas, it is not possible to get a local phone number for your VOIP phone. You can still get and use VOIP service but you won’t have a local phone number. For example, if you live in Podunk Idaho, you may not be able to get a phone number for your VOIP phone that is local to Podunk, but you CAN get a local number for Boise Idaho. The problem with this is that when people want to call you on your VOIP phone, they will actually be making a long distance call to reach you, since your phone number is a Boise number.

If you are just considering VOIP service for making long distance calls and really don’t care that local residents will need to make a long distance call to reach your VOIP phone, then this is not an issue, but it is something to be aware of nonetheless.
